Connection Problems
Yes, there are common connection problems. Although it does sometimes have something to do with our equipment, that has been rare over the past year. Usually it just takes a little tweaking of some settings on your computer to get in.

The most common connection problems are:

Windows 95: Could not establish a compatible set of network protocols...

This error usually means you need to turn your computer system completely off for 30 seconds and turn it back on. Make sure you also turn off your modem if it's external.

Windows 95: The modem hangs up when it says "Verifying Username and Password"

Double click on My Computer. Double click on Control Panel. Double click on Network. Look for TCP/IP in the list of networking components. If it's not there, click Add, select Protocol, select Microsoft and double click on TCP/IP, then click Ok, and say yes when your computer needs to restart. (Note: you might need your Windows 95 CD ROM.) If TCP/IP is there, then there's probably also an AOL Adapter. Remove the AOL Adapter by highlighting it and then clicking the Remove button.

Windows 95: It connects okay, but then no WWW sites come up

Double click on My Computer. Double click on Control Panel. Double click on Network. There's probably an AOL Adapter. Remove the AOL Adapter by highlighting it and then clicking the Remove button.

Windows 3.x: Could not establish a compatible set of network protocols...

Next time you're on the connect to dialog box, click on Properties, then check "Bring up terminal window after dialling," then click Ok. When you click on Connect, the modem will dial in, and a 3rd party security screen will pop up. When you see the word "login:" just click on the Continue button. There is no need to type anything into that 3rd party security screen--just click Continue.

The mouse stops working when you dial in

You're having an IRQ conflict. Contact your computer or modem manufacturer to correct this problem.

The system keeps asking for my password

Either your CAPS LOCK key is on and it shouldn't be, you're typing in the wrong password, or your account has lapsed so we closed it.

Connection Speeds

Connection speeds are considered "acceptable" on a 28.8kbps modem if you connect at 21000bps or greater. If you are finding that you connect at less of a data rate than you would like, try replacing the cord between your computer and the telephone wall jack. If your computer is not directly plugged into the wall jack, try it. The problem is with line quality, not with your computer or our computers. Here are some samples of connect speeds:

arrow Derek - 28.8kbps modem, 28800 connection every time except during storms
